Tequila Sunrise – A Cinco de Mayo and Brunch Cocktail Alternative

With Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, I really wanted an alternative to the standard margarita. And then when thinking about Mother’s Day approaching on Sunday, it dawned on me—make a Tequila Sunrise. Why did that dawn on me? Well, my mom is not a drinker, but for some odd reason she loves a tequila cocktail. Along with having a Tequila Sunrise, she’s been known to order a Dirty Mother. It sounds so, well, dirty, but it’s just a White Russian with tequila instead of vodka. Pretty good actually, although I think she likes it because the name shocks people. She’s pretty funny like that. It’s another drink I should blog about, but I digress. Below is the recipe for a classic Tequila Sunrise. You are suppose to serve it in a highball glass, but my cute cocktail glasses are short and I figure, does it really matter?

The orange juice makes this drink so light and refreshing, perfect for warmer days and also a fun addition to any brunch—it is named after the sunrise after all.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz. orange juice
  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine (just until you get that sunrise effect)
  • Orange slice
  • Ice

Directions

Served on the rocks, place ice in glass and then pour in orange juice and tequila and stir. Add the grenadine slowly along the side of the glass, it will sink to the bottom. Don’t stir so you get the sunrise effect. Garnish with an orange slice (the classic recipe also calls for a cherry). Enjoy.

Isn’t the color just so pretty! The name couldn’t be better—sunrise beautiful indeed.

Seriously, I see this as a new brunch and baby/bridal shower cocktail this spring and summer. It would be an easy addition to your mimosa bars—there’s always room for champagne and tequila.
